Kratom dosage should be fairly straightforward, right? Unfortunately, no.
Kratom is a pretty variable botanical source, meaning no two plants are alike, and when you consume it, it interacts with your body, which is also unique. Everything from the product’s quality to your personal physiology will affect how much you need to get your desired effect.
With all of these complications, it can be hard to figure out how many grams of powder, pills, or shots to take. If you have questions about how to dose kratom, you’ll want to start here.
(And if you want to avoid this headache, at Black Sheep, we work with single-origin kratom extract that delivers consistent and predictable effects, taking a lot of the guesswork out of the equation.)
Intro to Kratom Dosage
Let’s start with the most basic definition: a kratom dosage is a measured serving of kratom taken to achieve a desired effect.
It should be made clear that the term "dosage" is not used here in a medical, prescriptive sense.
Now, let's peel back the first layer of the definition. Kratom is plant-derived and comes in many different qualities and formats, so it doesn't come with guaranteed uniformity.
Dosage is defined in different ways depending on the form:
- Grams of kratom powder and leaf products
- Milligrams of kratom based on active alkaloids (primarily mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine) for extracts and liquids
Just keep in mind that when it comes to leaves and powders, there is a lot of variation between sources and even within different batches from the same source.
Based on the current body of research, the mitragynine content in raw powder ranges from 1.4% per gram to 2% per gram. This means that two products with identical serving sizes can deliver very different experiences—and why we work exclusively with kratom extracts to help reduce that session-to-session volatility.
Quality controls aside for a second, this is just what happens when you work with unrefined plant-based ingredients like kratom leaves.
Understanding Kratom’s Biphasic Effects
The next layer of complexity is kratom’s very noticeable biphasic effect. Biphasic means that, depending on serving size, you can expect a spectrum of very different effects.
In kratom’s case, this is what that typically looks like:
- Smaller serving: stimulating effects with a sharper focus, mood lift, and energy boost
- Larger servings: sedating effects with greater relaxation, physical comfort, and a noticeable slowdown
The scientific explanation behind kratom’s biphasic effects boils down to how the alkaloids interact with the body’s receptors.
For example, mitragynine interacts with opioid receptors but, at lower concentrations, also activates adrenergic pathways, which are involved in alertness and energy. At higher concentrations, the opioid receptor activity suddenly dominates, so the sedating effects take over.
This is why chasing a strain name or vein color totally misses the point. If you’re still looking for “Bali kratom dosage “ or “Maeng Da kratom dosage for pain,” we hate to break it to you, but these labels tell you nothing about dose size or alkaloid content.
If the alkaloid content isn't standardized and disclosed, you're basing your dose on marketing fluff, not science.
Kratom Dosage Chart by Effect
Clearly, there’s no simple answer to the question of “how much kratom should I take?” Product quality, format, and potency play a role, but so do your own tolerance and unique physiology.
Still, you’ll want to have a starting point for calculating serving size. So without further ado, here is your kratom dosage chart:
| Effect | Powder or Leaf Serving | Extract Serving | What to Expect |
| Energy & Focus | 1–3g | 17–34mg |
|
| Mood & Social Ease | 2–4g | 34–68mg |
|
| Discomfort Relief | 3–6g | 68–100mg |
|
| Relaxation & Sleep | 5–8g+ | Above 100mg |

Beginner Kratom Serving Size Recommendations
Speaking of starting points, if you’ve never tried kratom before, you’ll want to start low and go slow.
To keep the experience pleasant and predictable, beginners should probably start their journey with a slightly more conservative serving than their more experienced peers.
If you have one of our Kratom Shots, a beginner serving is half a capful, which equals about 17 mg of mitragynine. 1/4 of a dropper of our Kratom Tinctures, on the other hand, is about 34mg of mitragynine.
But what if you’re working with powder or capsules? A starter dose will look quite different. Remember, potency and quality vary widely between brands and formats, especially with powders.
When in doubt, follow these beginner-friendly guidelines:
- Start low: Based on product information, aim for 17–34mg of mitragynine for the first serving. If the label doesn’t provide potency information, studies have shown that most powders contain 1.4% to 2% mitragynine per gram.
- Go slow: If you don’t feel anything, wait at least 60–90 minutes before taking a second small serving.
- Avoid stacking. If you do go back for seconds (or thirds), space out your servings as much as possible to avoid unwanted side effects.
- Track effects: As you become more familiar with the effects and your tolerance, keep tracking your response.
Remember, it's better to start with a low dose and increase slowly than jump into the deep end and risk any adverse effects like sedation and nausea.
Factors to Consider For Kratom Dosage
No two people respond to kratom the same way. A dose that works well for someone else may be too much (or too little) for you.
Why can it feel so different between people? There are several identified factors, layered together, that lead to so many differences in experienced effects. Let’s take a look at a few of these to provide more context:
1. Body and Genetics
Your BMI, metabolism, and maybe even your genetic makeup influence how quickly kratom is processed and how strongly it's felt. Researchers are still trying to figure out why some people are simply more sensitive to mitragynine than others.
2. Tolerance
New to kratom? You’ll usually feel stronger effects at much lower doses than those with experience. Tolerance builds with regular use, which is why the same dose can feel very different six weeks in compared to day one.
3. Digestion
An empty stomach means a faster onset and more pronounced effects. But if you’ve just eaten lunch, it will naturally slow absorption and smooth out the experience—especially if the meal was high in fat.
4. Product Format
Powder, capsules, and extracts aren’t interchangeable. A gram of powder and a gram of extract are completely different.
The only reliable way to compare across formats is mitragynine content per serving.
5. Source and Standardization
Raw leaf potency varies from batch to batch, farm to farm, and even season to season. Standardized extracts with third-party testing, as we use at Black Sheep, are the only way to verify potency.
Reminder! There are big differences between powder and extract dosage.
This point needs highlighting! There is a world of difference between how to dose powder and how to dose kratom tincture.
Kratom powder is the raw, dried leaf, and while highly variable, it's the least potent form. But extracts are highly concentrated, so a much smaller volume will hit much harder. Should you measure out a spoonful of extract in the same way you’d measure powder, it could easily push you over the edge.
So, kratom powder is usually measured in grams, while extracts are measured in milligrams of mitragynine, though the physical measurement for liquid products is milliliters.
How To Measure Kratom Accurately
With a kratom dosage range in mind, the next step is actually measuring it out. And just like baking, grams and milliliters beat spoonfuls and scoops, because the latter two measurements just aren’t accurate enough.
Step 1: Read the Label
Start by reading the label. Look for disclosed alkaloid content, ideally backed by third-party lab results and a clearly stated serving size.
If neither is there, you’ll want to underestimate the starting serving just to be on the safe side.
Step 2: Use a Scale
For powder, the next step is to use a digital scale that measures in grams. Get a kitchen scale for $15 off on Amazon, and look for one that goes down to 2 decimal places for greater accuracy (e.g., 2.00 grams).
If you’re working with capsules, you’ll have to take the label’s word for the potency per cap and the recommended serving.
For tinctures and liquid shots, milliliters are the standard unit of measurement. Black Sheep Shots and tinctures do the heavy lifting for you. Every bottle uses single-source, lab-tested extract with verified mitragynine content per serving. The recommended dose is a half-a-cap serving for Kratom Shot and ¼ of a dropper for Kratom Tinctures—consistent every single time.
How Much Kratom Per Day Is Okay?
There's no universal daily limit for kratom, and it always depends on your tolerance, the format, and how your body responds.
That said, most research suggests keeping daily intake under 8g of powder, which, on the serving spectrum, is actually at the higher end. As always, beginners should be well below that. For Black Sheep Kratom Shots, we don't recommend exceeding a maximum of 3 capfuls per 24-hour period—that's about 100 mg of mitragynine.
Whatever your format, less is usually more. Daily use builds tolerance quickly, so if you're reaching for the max every day, it's probably time for a break.
Tolerance and Safety Considerations
A gradual kratom tolerance is almost unavoidable with frequent use, with physical dependence possible in extreme cases.
The more often you use kratom, the larger a serving you’ll probably need to feel the same effect. This isn’t a reason to avoid kratom, but it is a good reason to be more thoughtful about how you approach it.
Here are a few safety considerations to keep your relationship with kratom safe, especially if you’re looking to increase the effects:
Take breaks
Go a few days in between to help reset tolerance and reduce the risk of dependence.
Try on an empty stomach
A full stomach tends to slow absorption and smooth out the experience, so try it on an empty stomach for faster onset (but expect stronger effects).
Don't mix with other substances: Combining kratom with alcohol, sedatives, or other depressants significantly increases risk. This isn't a soft suggestion; there is never a reason to mix kratom with other substances.
Combine with a potentiator
You might want to try a potentiator like the black pepper extract we use in Black Sheep Kratom. A small dose increase can improve alkaloid absorption without increasing the dose itself.
Pay attention to the side effects
If you’re experiencing nausea, dizziness, or strong sedation, these are signals to reduce your dose or take a break.
Make Serving Easy With Black Sheep Kratom
Most of the complexity around kratom dosing comes down to just one thing: not knowing what's actually in your product. That's the problem Black Sheep is formulated to solve.
Every Black Sheep shot uses single-source, lab-tested extract with verified mitragynine content per serving. That means you don’t have to guess about how much is in your next serving, no matter the size.
Start with half a capful, and see how you feel.
What is a low dose of kratom?
A low dose is generally considered 1 to 3g of powder or leaf, or roughly 17 to 34 mg of mitragynine in a standardized extract. At this range, most people report stimulating effects, including improved energy, focus, and mood.
What is a high dose of kratom?
Anything above 5g of powder (or more than 68 mg of mitragynine) moves into high-dose territory. Effects shift from stimulating to sedating, including heavier relaxation, physical comfort, and drowsiness. Adverse effects like nausea and dizziness also become more common.
Above 8g, the risk of side effects rises sharply. High doses are definitely not for beginners.
How much kratom should I take for energy?
Stay in the 1–3g range for powder, or 17mg for an extract. It often doesn’t take much to achieve the stimulating effects of kratom, and remember, the more you take, the more kratom will shift into sedation.
How much kratom should I take for pain?
First, it's time for a very important disclosure: the FDA does not evaluate kratom for the treatment of any medical condition, including pain. This answer isn’t intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
With that said, in recently published research, survey respondents do report using kratom for physical discomfort. They tend to report servings ranging from low to high, although most fall within 3–6g for powder. This is self-reported, and the original product was not verified.
Can you take kratom every day?
Daily use increases tolerance over time, meaning you'll eventually need more to get a consistent effect. It also raises the risk of dependence. If you choose to use kratom regularly, keeping doses low, taking periodic breaks, and tracking your response over time are all worth doing.
What happens if you take too much kratom?
Uh-oh…what happens if you take too much? At higher doses, nausea, dizziness, and vomiting are the most common adverse effects. Very high doses can cause sedation and greater confusion. And there are more serious risks if kratom is combined with alcohol, sedatives, or other medications. If you've taken too much, stop, stay hydrated, and get some rest. In extreme cases, seek medical assistance.
How much kratom is in a capsule?
Not an easy question! With so many products, potencies, and brands available, there is no one accurate answer. Most capsules seem to range from 0.30 grams to 0.50 grams, but unless you’re looking at third-party lab results, this doesn’t guarantee mitragynine content.
